For some of these movies the original was a little bit of a cult hit, had some word of mouth advertising after it was out of theatres, and then when the 2nd one was released, that was kind of "the big one". Or, maybe the first one was enough to attract a bigger budget (Lethal Weapon, Rambo, Saw, Terminator).
And lastly this is maybe interesting to somebody, both Star Wars Trilogies had the first one making the most money, then the last one, then the middle one.
